Organic farming is the form of agriculture that relies on techniques such as crop rotation, green manure, compost and biological pest control to maintain soil productivity and control pests on a farm. Organic farming excludes or strictly limits the use of manufactured fertilizers, pesticides (which include herbicides, insecticides and fungicides), plant growth regulators such as hormones, livestock antibiotics, food additives, and genetically modified organisms.[1]

Organic agricultural methods are internationally regulated and legally enforced by many nations, based in large part on the standards set by the International Federation of Organic Agriculture Movements (IFOAM), an international umbrella organization for organic farming organizations established in 1972.[2] IFOAM defines the overarching goal of organic farming as:

"Organic agriculture is a production system that sustains the health of soils, ecosystems and people. It relies on ecological processes, biodiversity and cycles adapted to local conditions, rather than the use of inputs with adverse effects. Organic agriculture combines tradition, innovation and science to benefit the shared environment and promote fair relationships and a good quality of life for all involved.."

—International Federation of Organic Agriculture Movements[3]

Since 1990, the market for organic products has grown from nothing, reaching $55 billion in 2009 according to Organic Monitor (www.organicmonitor.com). This demand has driven a similar increase in organically managed farmland. Approximately 37,000,000 hectares (91,000,000 acres) worldwide are now farmed organically, representing approximately 0.9 percent of total world farmland (2009) (see Willer/Kilcher 2011).

[edit] History

Main article: History of organic farming

Organic farming (of many particular kinds) was the original type of agriculture, and has been practiced for thousands of years. After the industrial revolution had introduced inorganic methods, some of which were not well developed and had serious side effects, an organic movement began in the 1940s as a reaction to agriculture's growing reliance on synthetic fertilizers. Artificial fertilizers had been created during the 18th century, initially with superphosphates and then ammonia-based fertilizers mass-produced using the Haber-Bosch process developed during World War I. These early fertilizers were cheap, powerful, and easy to transport in bulk. Similar advances occurred in chemical pesticides in the 1940s, leading to the decade being referred to as the 'pesticide era'.[4]

Although organic farming is prehistoric in the widest sense, Sir Albert Howard is widely considered to be the "father of organic farming" in the sense that he was a key founder of the post-industrial-revolution organic movement.[5] Further work was done by J.I. Rodale in the United States, Lady Eve Balfour in the United Kingdom, and many others across the world. The modern organic movement is a revival movement in the sense that it seeks to restore balance that was lost when technology grew rapidly in the 19th and 20th centuries.

Modern organic farming has made up only a fraction of total agricultural output from its beginning until today. Increasing environmental awareness in the general population has transformed the originally supply-driven movement to a demand-driven one. Premium prices and some government subsidies attracted farmers. In the developing world, many producers farm according to traditional methods which are comparable to organic farming but are not certified. In other cases, farmers in the developing world have converted for economic reasons.[6]

Gothic, Weddings

84rate or flag this page

By Lela Davidson

When it comes to unique themed weddings, Goth, or Gothic, themed weddings are among the most unique. Whether or not you're a true Goth, you may want to have a Gothic themed wedding, or incorporate some elements of a the dramitic elements of a gothic wedding ceremony.

Goth vs. Gothic

The Goth movement grew out of the punk rock scence movement of the 1980s and holds as one of it's main tenets the idea of rejection of mainstream belief and values. Think of modern day hippies with a totally different fashion aesthetic. Goths see themselves as free thinkers, and often are associated with taboo subjects like magic, mysticism and the occult. To them, a gothic themed wedding ceremony represents a rejection of traditional wedding practices. Goths might even reject the traditional marriage relationship and so want a different type of wedding.

There are also those brides and grooms who while living a fairly conventional lifestyle, are simply drawn to the drama and style of a Gothic style wedding, which often incorporates elements of mysticism and ancient practices, darker color schemes, and dramatic feel. A gothic themed wedding can be an affirmation of a life philosophy, an homage to Victorian literature, or simply a dramatic and creative look.

Typical Elements of a Gothic Themed Wedding

Because they are so unique, the elements of Gothic themed weddings will vary greatly, but there are some common ways to create the look and feel.

Color - Gothic wedding ceremonies are characterized by a darker color scheme. Plan for black red, or purple wedding attire and accessories, including flowers. For a toned down look, opt for rich jewel tones of ruby red, navy and emerald green with black accents.

Candles - You can never have too many candles. Think of a dark castle on a heath during a storm in a horror movie. That's the ambiance you want to create.

Music - Gothic themed weddings are not likely to include the wedding march or traditional hymms. A haunting and melodic classical overture would be perfect. Of course some couples will opt for a more aggressive goth rock sound.

Location - You can wear a red and black velvet gown and matching bride and groom eyeliner, but a gothic themed wedding at the Embassy Suites might not feel right. Try to find an older location or at least on with an older feel to invoke a sense of drama. Look for velvet chairs and heavy draperies, stone fireplaces, arches and oak paneling. Wherever the ceremony, ask whether or not you can add your own gothic touches to enhance the atmosphere.

Wedding Gowns - While there are a lot of websites selling gothic style gowns, depending on your taste and budget, you may want to shop for patterns and fabric, and then have a local seamtress sew a custom gown just for you. Goth or not, a bride needs to feel beautiful on her wedding day.

Accessories - You might think you're on your own when it comes to the supplies for a gothic themed wedding. Wrong! There are plenty of stores that sell everything from black wedding invitations to crow wedding cake toppers. There's no excuse not to have the wedding of your gothic dreams!

if you want World Peace! --->

If you want to improve your community and have a better life for you and your family, you’re going to have to take notice of what President John F. Kennedy orated in one of his final speeches which is that world peace is the most important topic on earth. In the United States, we are devouring our children’s inheritance to the cost of, $ 20,000 per MINUTE buying a war that we will get nothing back from except shell shocked brothers and sisters and a corporate made video selling/telling us its horrible history… After the fact… when it’s too late but now you can take action, now you can save lives. You can still make a difference and write your congressman and tell them if they want to cut cost, we can start with military spending first and channel that into education instead.

"Were all pieces in the same puzzle of life and all of you are an important component. No matter how unimportant we feel are part might be, without you, the puzzle won’t be complete."

-Marilyn Furge-Addison

The rest of us, are missing you.

But let’s get real and let me tell you what I want to talk about… A phrase written in stone at the United Nations Building in New York City.

“They will turn their swords into plows and their spears into pruning shears:

Nation will not lift up sword against [another] nation, nor will they become skilled at war at all.”

-The Prophet Isaiah 2:4

Their focus will be one making food for the hungry, caring for the weak amongst their own people and helping a neighbor when they can. We can’t all save the world but we can help someone or even just improve ourselves.

Now some people will tell you that quote foretells something evil but it doesn’t. If so, then they haven’t thought it out… How could the end come if the thousand years of peace ON EARTH (also prophesied) hasn’t been fulfilled yet, or do you call your own book a lie? Isn’t it just possible that the end is just a goal and you are supposed to go to the goal of peace by means of tolerance?

Just because you go to the END of the block doesn’t mean you have nothing else to do. “End” as a word has 17 different meanings, so in the end there can be many goals that are a means to an end.

The world isn't fair... but you can be. As I look out across the vast expansion of cyber space, I see an army of peace lovers that understand; only true strength overcomes fear. That strength I'm speaking of comes from inside and you don't need a gun to wield it, you need a heart of conviction and a soul willing to stand up to adversity to defend the weak so as to teach them that the same spirit of sovereignty and love courses through their veins. Together, we will become a relentless power for integrity and mercy that will overwhelm the voice of odium and separation.

"Do not let your fire go out, spark by irreplaceable spark in the hopeless swaps of the not-quite, the not-yet, and the not-at-all. Do not let the hero in your soul perish in lonely frustration for the life you deserved and have never been able to reach. The world you desire can be won. It exists... it is real... it is possible... it's yours."

— Ayn Rand

Are you scared of vampires? Read here to find out all about the origin and history of these mysterious creatures.

The idea of drinking blood to be immortal is not a foreign one to the human mind. Indians, Greeks and Christians have all had a part in this conception. Drinking the blood of another is sometimes understood as obtaining the "life-blood" of someone else for yourself. Therefore, the idea of the vampire stems from cannibalism, and the concept of putting someone's body inside your own to obtain more life.

Vampires are creatures that maintain immortality by sucking blood from humans and animals. They are night creatures, and the sight of sunlight turns them to stone, or sometimes dust. Typically, they are characterized by black capes, long corpse-like bodies and the ability to fly, although whether or not these characteristics were included in the original vampire myths is not known. They sleep in coffins, can't stand churches, and scream at the sight of garlic. Vampires are also highly sexual, and they often prey on members of both sexes.

There are several creatures that may have acted as precursors to the vampire. The leech is perhaps the most basic, representing the idea of a slimy, forboding creature taking human blood. The chupacabra, a blood-sucking alien creature that feasts on animals, is another vampire-like myth. This myth originated in the hills of South America, and still exists today. The myth of the fury, or a women that sucks the life from a sleeping victim, was created in Greek times to represent the wrath of the Gods. These creatures were released upon the earth to suck sould through the mouths of their victims, and send them to agony-filled torment in Hades, or Hell. Finally, a species known as the "vampire bat" has been studied by many scientists because of its strange eating habits. This bat sucks the blood of its victims by making a clean cut to the neck and main artery. It's saliva contains chemicals that gradually take consciousness from the creature it it eating.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The vampire myth appears to have originated in Transylvania, according to the Stoker novel, in the dark hills of eastern Europe. Stoker's Dracula is an old, placid man that appears harmless except for an air of doom about his castle. His vampires are the curse of the surrounding towns, and the descendants of a strange disease.

It is often very hard to tell which pieces of the vampire myth were added from literature, and which were originally spread through word of mouth. Bram Stoker's Dracula is the cause of new conventions in the vampire legend. His book included the use of garlic to fend off vampires, stakes as killing tools and the ability of vampires to crawl upside-down on a wall. The novels of Anne Rice, including Interview With a Vampire, are also spreading twists in the definition of a vampire. Her vampires are immortal, jaded and mostly ordinary people caught in something they cannot understand.

It is interesting to note the way that the concept of vampires is used in the literature that contains it. Stoker's Dracula was an unconscious comment on Victorian England, and underneath its plot one can see female subjugation. Stoker himself was torn between the convention of the sexes in this day, and underneath this book one can see his inner struggle. Similarly, Anne Rice uses vampires to examine the reaction of the modern world to the magical and horrific. In Interview With A Vampire, the main character asks to be made into a vampire. The vampire he asks is unwilling to comply.

Today there are actually some cults of "vampires" that exist. These people drink small amounts of blood from willing victims in keeping with the ancient belief that it will bring power and life.

Synopsis

I've taken 1979 as the year when goth as a modern musical movement first began to appear. A case can be made for 1978 since this was the year when Joy Division, the Cure and the Banshees all released their debut singles, but 1979 is the year when the first undisputably gothic music appeared- notably Bauhaus with "Bela Lugosi's Dead" (which is probably the first record that defies classification as anything other than goth). Several other classic goth records date from 1979: "Unknown Pleasures", "Boys Don't Cry", and "Transmission".

Also, the idea of "gothic" as a way of describing an emerging musical style seems to date from 1979.

In a Factory Records interview by Mary Hannon in the summer of 1979, there is the following passage: "One clue to Joy Division lies in their album's title. Another is the description given by Martin Hannett, who calls them 'dancing music, with gothic overtones'. Uninintentionally, Bernard Albrecht gave an excellent description of 'gothic' in our interview, when describing his favourite film 'Nosferatu'." The article goes on to describe Joy Division as "20th century gothic". Later on, on the BBC2 TV programme "Something Else" (15/9/79), Tony Wilson described Joy Division as being "gothic" in comparison with the pop mainstream. By early October, Penny Kiley was saying that ""Gothic' has become a somewhat overworked definition of the genre, but the effect of Joy Division is the same as ...that of the Banshees." in a review of Joy Division's Liverpool gig .
